Be the Light in the Darkness: Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27) or International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Today, we remember the millions of people killed by the Nazis, as well as victims of subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. It is an opportunity to reflect on how to challenge discrimination, racism and hatred; all of which have led to such crimes against humanity.
Holocaust education and global citizenship education are historically linked and deeply interconnected. They represent two sides of the same coin: one marks the depth of human suffering and persecution, while the other cultivates the positive values that could prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
This year’s theme is ‘BE THE LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS’. Let us consider different types of “darkness”; identity-based persecution, disinformation, denial of justice; and different ways of “being the light”, such as resistance, acts of solidarity and bravery, rescue, and the revelation of lies.

Support book collection project for libraries in Tanzania

Mr Laurence Zerafa, the brother of Mr Anthony Zerafa who was teaching Physics in Sixth Form until his retirement last June 2020, is a librarian who spent time doing voluntary work in Tanzania.
He is back in Malta and now has a mega project going, collecting books for 10 school libraries in Tanzania. A benefactor is sponsoring a container in which to send the books.

Check out the detailed info below:

  • Follow the dedicated Facebook page

We will be helping Laurence with this project by serving as a collection point for books. Moreover, Sixth Form students will also be assisting Laurence with sorting the books out. The students will be using these hours as part of their Social Responsibility Programme, coordinated by Bro Alex.

Should you wish to donate books, you are invited to place them in a bag or box and leave them at the Sixth Form reception.

With thanks to you all for your generous donations!

Sale of Oranges and Fresh Orange Juice at the Secondary School

Sale of Oranges and Fresh Orange Juice at the Secondary School

With the cooperation of the Jesuit Community, the Secondary School will be organising orange picking sessions in the Jesuits’ orchard, and will be selling bags of oranges (to take home) for the cost of €2 per bag, as well as a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice at school for the cost of €1 per glass (approximately 250ml).

These events will take place all throughout this week (18th – 22nd January) for students in Shift A and all throughout the following week (25th – 29th January) for students in Shift B.

Those who are interested in buying a bag of fresh oranges are kindly asked to bring a cloth bag from home. Alternatively, we can provide a large heavy-duty cloth bag for an additional cost of €2. These were knitted for us by a lovely group of ladies* at Craft & Coffee for Charity, who spent their summer knitting around 80 reusable cloth bags from recycled material and then donating them to us.

The sale of freshly squeezed orange juice will also be held during break time. Students must bring their own cup (reusable and not glass). Please note:

  • Single-use plastic cups and/or straws are strictly forbidden.
  • All money collected will be passed on to the Jesuit Community to help families in need.

NOTE: *As compensation for the reusable shopping bags provided by the Craft & Coffee for Charity, the EkoSkola team will be organizing a collection of unused/unwanted yarn/wool for Craft & Coffee for Charity. The donated yarn will be hand-worked into lovely gifts for cancer patients. We invite you to bring the yarn in paper bags, and leave it at the office of Ms Sasha Borg.

Thank you to all for your support and contributions!
