Foundation Day 2024 at St Aloysius College
On October 8, St Aloysius College celebrated Foundation Day: 117 years of mission and service!
This year the “men and women for others” award, which is the highest award given by College, was posthumously presented to Dr Victor Calvagna. Dr Calvagna was a pediatric consultant who specialized in paediatric oncology. He was also the founder of Puttinu Cares, an organization that supports cancer patients and their relatives.
After the homily, his wife, Mrs Carmen Calvagna received the award and made a clear appeal to all students to be motivated to pursue a career based not on how much money one earns but on the values of care and generosity.
We also awarded the “men and women for others” award to Dr Gabriel Ellul, a young psychiatrist who is living his profession in line with the values of our College and with special attention to caring for adolescents with mental health problems. He also appealed to students to connect with others because this helps form attachments which reduce the risks of mental health problems.
On Foundation Day, the College also introduces a theme for the year. For this scholastic year 2024/2025 we chose ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, which is the theme chosen by Pope Francis for the Jubilee.
Five members of staff, two from the Primary school, two from the Secondary school and one from the Sixth Form were given the “25 years of service award”.
Special moments like these help all the educational community to strengthen its ethos and raison d’être. We are very grateful to all educators and members of staff for their dedication and generosity.
Words by Fr Jimmt Bartolo SJ, Rector of St Aloysius College.
