On Sunday 18th May, our College will host festalwiġi, a fun-packed day for all the family.
Dr Maria Montebello will be the new Rector of St Aloysius College starting from September 2025. This was announced in a letter sent out by the Chairperson of the St Aloysius College Board Dr Charles Bonello.
The letter with this announcement is being reproduced in full here below:
Dear members of the St Aloysius College community,
I hope that this email finds you and your loved ones keeping well and that you were able to share some quality time with your family during the Easter period.
Over the past weeks, Fr Ronny Alessio s.j., Provincial of the Euro-Mediterranean Province, in collaboration with the St Aloysius College Board, appointed a Selection Board, following a public call for applications, to oversee the process of choosing the new Rector for St Aloysius College. Dr Ian Mifsud, Director General at the Secretariat for Catholic Education, who chaired the board, presented a report on the selection process to the College Board. The report was discussed and approved by the Board and passed on to Fr Provincial for his deliberation and approval. Following discussions with his advisors, Fr Ronny Alessio s.j. confirmed the result and appointed Dr Maria Montebello as the new Rector of St Aloysius College, starting 1st September 2025.
Dr Montebello is presently Head of the St. Ignatius College, Prof Edward de Bono Handaq Middle School and she has been in this role since 2012. Prior to this role, she was the Head of School at St Benedict College, Safi, Primary School and previously she was the Assistant Head of School at St Benedict College, Ghaxaq, Primary School. These long years in leadership have provided Dr Montebello with first hand expertise in school development, policy implementation, inclusive practices, cultural adaptation and strategic leadership.
Dr Montebello has played a valuable role in the transition from St. Ignatius College Girls’ Secondary school to a thriving Co-Ed Middle school. The present transition process of St. Aloysius College Boys’ Secondary School to Co-Ed will surely benefit from her experience on this matter.
Her dedication to holistic education includes initiatives such as Student Council Democracy, Green EkoSkola Programmes, Healthy Lifestyle policies, and Strength-Based Coaching and Leadership Challenges. Her focus on faith formation, sustainability, global citizenship, social justice, global network, human excellence, life-long learning, and student empowerment align with the Jesuit educational vision and mission of St. Aloysius College.
Dr Maria Montebello holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, a Master’s in Education (Philosophy of Education), a Postgraduate Diploma in School Administration and Management, and a Bachelor’s in Education (Hons) in Early Middle Years and Geography.
She is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta in the Master of Arts in Catholic School Leadership programme on – ‘Critical Issues for School Leaders’. Her lecturing role strengthens her ability to mentor school leaders in faith-based education.
We thank Fr Jimmy Bartolo s.j. for his twelve and a half years of service as Rector and wish him all the very best in his new mission as Secretary for Education of the Society of Jesus. He will be supporting a smooth transition through a thorough handover process.
The Jesuit community who remain fully committed to their presence and work at the College, members of the St Aloysius College Board and I would like to congratulate Dr Montebello and look forward to supporting her as she steps into this role. Whilst aware that this is a challenging role, we are sure that Dr Montebello will do her utmost to serve the College educational community and to continue the good work carried out so far for the benefit of students, their families and members of staff of the three schools.
Wishing you all a smooth and productive final term of the 2024–2025 school year.
Dr Charles Bonello
Chairperson, St Aloysius College Board
