** Spotlight post ** – ‘The Second Life of Rubbish’

On Friday 18th, our Preps 3 & 4, as well as EkoSkola Committee, School Council and LEAF members, participated in a super interesting online session titled GLOBE Seeds and Soil We Explore Challenge, a collaboration project coordinated by ESD @ Xrobb l-Għaġin and GLOBE Malta.
The main aims of this session were experiencing the life cycle of a plant, and appreciating the functions of soil in supporting that same seedling and life in the Earth system. It induced critical thinking through hands-on investigations that link to ESD themes. These include soil erosion, climate change, the urban heat island effect (UHIE) and more. It seeks to inspire participants in taking actions to curb down these effects. These actions will be placed within the international context through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also aims at presenting protocols from the international science and education GLOBE Program to
engage participants in citizen science.

** UPDATE **
Following this fruitful session, our students were invited to submit their reflections regarding one thing they learned today, one thing they would like to learn more about, and one thing they can do to help nature. The response was great! All student submissions will be sent to the organisers of the original seed-planting event.
Check out the great suggestions in the samples below:
One thing I learned today is that trees can control flooding, when roots and soil absorb a considerable amount of water.
– Edward-Arthur Portelli, Prep 3I will think twice about buying toys, especially made of plastic.
– Jenna Cardona, Prep 3I am going to make sure I tell everyone that I know how important trees and plants are in our lives.
– Ciaran Hackett, Prep 3
Well done to all our students!
