St Aloysius College Rector, Fr Jimmy Bartolo SJ, has been formally appointed as Worldwide Secretary for Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education. Fr Bartolo will commence this new role at the beginning of January 2026, thereby continuing the mission that has been successfully carried out by Fr. Jose Alberto Mesa, SJ.

All of us educators and members of staff at College join the members of the board and the community of St Aloysius College in Malta in congratulating Fr Jimmy Bartolo on this new role.

Fr Jimmy Bartolo joined the Society of Jesus in 1986. After completing his initial years of formation, he studied Philosophy at the Aloisianum in Padua, Italy and was sent for his regency at St Aloysius College in Malta. He pursued his first degree in Theological Studies at the Milltown Institute for Philosophy and Theology in Dublin, Ireland. At Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain, he obtained his Licentiate in Theology and obtained diplomas in psychotherapy.

After his ordination, Fr Jimmy spent ten years serving as chaplain of the University of Malta and was part-time educator at St Aloysius College Sixth Form. He was also superior of the Jesuit community in Msida, the Jesuit university residence. He served as assistant headmaster and chaplain at St Aloysius College Sixth Form between 2008 and 2011. Fr Jimmy pursued a Master’s degree in educational leadership at Boston College, Massachusetts, USA. He became rector (Principal) of St Aloysius College in Malta in February 2013, a post he currently holds.

Fr Jimmy has been co-ordinator of the Church Schools Association in Malta since 2015, and is currently a member of the JECSE (Jesuit European Committee for Primary and Secondary Education) steering committee. He was president of the Fondazione Gesuiti Educazione (the equivalent of Province education delegate) of the Euro-Mediterranean Province between 2017 and 2022. For many years he served as consultor of the former Maltese Jesuit Province.
